For high school and university students interested in innovation, business, and problem-solving, summer can be more than a break from school but an opportunity to create something meaningful. The LaunchX Summer Programs are designed for students who want to explore entrepreneurship in a hands-on, real-world way. Rather than focusing on lectures alone, LaunchX immerses participants, who they call Launchies, in the process of building and testing startup ideas from the ground up.
This article breaks down what LaunchX is, who it’s for, how the program works, and what students gain from the experience.
LaunchX is an experiential entrepreneurship program for high school students (typically ages 14–18) that teaches the mindset and skills needed to create meaningful, real-world outcomes. Launched in 2012 by Laurie Stach, it began as a summer program at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) and has since expanded into a global ecosystem of online and in-person offerings.
Unlike traditional courses that focus on theory, LaunchX emphasizes “learning by doing.” Students aren’t there just to listen as this is where you team up, research, prototype, test, refine, and even sell real products and services as part of the curriculum.
LaunchX was awarded the Global Recognition Award in 2025 for its impact on youth entrepreneurship education worldwide and its ability to integrate real-world business challenges into learning.
In practice, students are introduced to fundamental entrepreneurial processes such as:
Beyond technical skills, LaunchX prioritizes collaboration, communication, independence, and Workshops cover topics such as business models, validation, product development, and storytelling. Mentors provide feedback at key milestones, helping students iterate and improve their ideas.

LaunchX runs a range of programs throughout the year, both online and in person:
These 3-week programs introduce entrepreneurship from the ground up, guiding students from zero experience to early ideation. Designed for first-time founders, the BootCamp focuses on how problems are identified, ideas are shaped, and innovation begins—without the pressure to launch a company yet.
This 2-week, in-person program offers hands-on entrepreneurial experience without the full flagship time commitment. Students move quickly from problem discovery to customer validation and prototyping, building a strong foundation in entrepreneurial thinking. It’s an ideal entry point for testing ideas, building confidence, and preparing for a deeper launch.
This 3-week applied innovation experience places students alongside real corporate partners to solve meaningful business challenges. Students explore how innovation happens inside established organizations through research, customer insight, prototyping, and strategic thinking, then pitch solutions directly to industry leaders. It’s especially well-suited for students curious about how ideas scale and create impact beyond startups.
The 5-week, full-time virtual accelerator guides students through the complete startup journey. Working in small teams, students identify real problems, build and iterate on an MVP, test the market, and generate real customer sales. Designed for students ready to move fast, the program prioritizes execution, resilience, and learning through traction—not just theory.
This is LaunchX’s most comprehensive experience. Over four weeks, students team up to build and launch real ventures from the ground up. Through rapid prototyping, customer testing, sales, and pitching, they experience entrepreneurship as it actually unfolds. The program emphasizes leadership, collaboration, and adaptability, mirroring the pace, pressure, and unpredictability of real startup life.
For 2026, all in-person programs will take place at UC San Diego.
This 8-week, part-time program places students inside real startups as interns, turning entrepreneurial learning into hands-on application. Designed for students who have already developed their own projects or completed entrepreneurship programs, it offers the opportunity to apply existing skills in a real startup environment.
Rather than building hypotheticals, students contribute to active projects, collaborate with global teams, and experience how early-stage companies operate day to day. They finish with portfolio-ready work, practical startup experience, and a deeper understanding of execution - how ideas become products, and how products become businesses.
For many participants, the Online Startup Experience represents the culmination of their LaunchX journey (for now): a transition from learning entrepreneurship to practicing it in the real world.
LaunchX is designed for students who are curious, motivated, and eager to solve problems. You don’t need to have prior startup experience to join; what matters most is a willingness to learn, experiment, and collaborate.
The ideal applicant is someone who:
Even students who are unsure about entrepreneurship can benefit, as the skills learned, such as critical thinking, teamwork, communication, and resilience, translate to almost any future path.
LaunchX applications typically involve academic information, personal essays that reflect your mindset and goals, and sometimes interviews, depending on the program. LaunchX looks for curiosity, creativity, and potential more than polished resumes.
There are multiple deadlines throughout the year, with earlier ones offering priority consideration and access to financial awards. Financial aid and scholarships are available, helping reduce barriers for qualified students from diverse backgrounds.
LaunchX has evolved beyond a summer program; it is an entrepreneurship journey that combines learning with doing, community with mentorship, and ideas with real market experience. If you are interested in starting a business one day or simply wants to build confidence and creative problem-solving skills, LaunchX offers a powerful environment to grow and experiment.
