The future of African innovation just took the stage. AwardX Kenya 2026 has officially wrapped up, being AwardX's first-ever in-person international pitch competition.
What started as a virtual pilot last year blossomed into a massive movement. Launched on March 11, the AwardX team hit the ground running, visiting schools across Kenya, including Alliance High School, Brookhouse Schools, Kenya High School, Strathmore School, and the M-PESA Foundation Academy, to show students that entrepreneurship isn't so much more than a classroom subject. We’re looking at the way to build solutions for the real world.
The journey culminated in an epic, high-energy live Demo Day, where over 500 applications were narrowed down to 9 finalist teams. These young founders took the stage live at M-PESA Foundation Academy to pitch their startups to a packed room of peers, educators, and renowned judges.

Eco-Glow stood out for turning a clear, everyday problem into a simple, practical solution people can use right now. Targeting energy poverty in off-grid communities, the team designed affordable solar-powered lighting systems to replace dangerous kerosene lamps. They won because they showed both heart and execution: a product that can improve study hours, safety, and household life while staying completely accessible to the communities that need it most.

HewaSafi impressed everyone with a bold, urgent response to urban air pollution. They developed an exhaust purification system built entirely from locally sourced materials, specifically targeting mass transit like matatus, boda bodas, and tuk-tuks. The team showed incredible technical depth, credibility, and real pilot traction, proving that environmental sustainability and affordability can absolutely go hand in hand.
VUNA earned massive recognition for tackling a huge but often overlooked challenge: post-harvest loss for smallholder farmers. The team realized the real issue is coordination, so they built a practical agritech platform around buyer matching, shared logistics, and cold storage accessibility. They took home the second runner-up spot and the "Fan Favorite" crown for creating a systems-level solution with huge regional market potential.
Pesa Baridi earned the Innovation Award for completely rethinking cold storage in a way that is deeply local and economically compelling. Their “Green Vault Cooler” combines evaporative cooling, local charcoal insulation, and solar-powered automation to protect produce without needing electricity. It stood out because it wasn’t just inventive—it was built for real market conditions, helping rural vendors cut down food waste and protect their daily income.
The top teams walked away with prizes designed to take their ventures to the next level. The first-place champions secured a $700 cash prize, a full scholarship to the LaunchX Online Flagship Program, and an exclusive full scholarship to the 2027 LaunchX Exploration Program in the USA for a team member. The second and third-place runners-up took home $500 and $300 in cash, respectively, alongside their own full scholarships to the Online Flagship Program. Proving that everyone on the big stage brought serious talent, all top 10 finalist teams unlocked a $3,000 scholarship toward the Online Flagship Program, with every participant taking home official certificates and LinkedIn badges to show the world exactly what they’ve built.
An event like this takes a village. AwardX Kenya 2026 was further strengthened by the support of an incredible ecosystem of judges, partners, and supporters who believed in the importance of investing in youth entrepreneurship.
A huge thank you to the judges Abdinoor Alimahdi, Olive Gachara, Sonia Kabra, Bhavesh Chandaria, and Florent (Flo) Nduwayezu. We’re incredibly grateful to have partnered with LaunchX, FLOW by TAO, PACE (Pan-African Center for Entrepreneurship), Dawati, iForge, Startinev, Mtoto News International, Impact360, and DINAO to create an experience that empowered students to think bigger.

The vision for AwardX has always extended far beyond a competition. It is about identifying raw talent and opening doors to deep entrepreneurial experiences worldwide. AwardX Kenya 26 demonstrated that when young Africans are given the opportunity, they rise to the occasion. They do not lack ideas or ambition. And if this year’s students taught us anything, it’s that the future is already here. Our responsibility is to continue building the stages that allow it to thrive.
