From the Lab to the Market: A 3-Step Blueprint for Purpose-Driven Founders

Technical skills are a powerful starting point for any founder. The ability to code, understand deep tech, or build complex mechanical systems is an advantage many entrepreneurs spend years trying to acquire. But a great product without a market is simply a brilliant idea. As many engineering-brained founders quickly discover, the path from the lab to a sustainable venture requires a massive mental pivot.
According to entrepreneur and TalkX speaker Jorge Sanz-Guerrero, technical founders must learn to be solution providers, not just technologists. This transformation isn't about abandoning your technical roots. It’s about leveraging them in a new way. The world is full of massive, complex challenges - and the bigger the problem, the bigger the opportunity.
To help purpose-driven founders navigate this transition, Jorge has developed a 3-step blueprint for venture creation.
Jorge Sanz-Guerrero is a consultant, mentor, and university lecturer who helps organizations solve problems, develop new opportunities, and turn ideas into action. With more than 10 years of experience in consulting projects, he has worked with startups, corporations, universities, and investment organizations across a variety of industries and from many countries. Jorge holds a Master's degree in Manufacturing Engineering from University of Michigan and currently teaches about Consulting and other topics at Universidad del Desarrollo, where he enjoys helping students bridge the gap between the classroom and the business world. Step 1: Know Yourself and What You Lack
Venture creation is intensely personal. Whatever you build will be demanding, and if it doesn't align with your core values, you will likely burn out before you scale.
It is so important that you know yourself. Understand what you desire, what’s important to you, and, crucially, what you lack. Are you motivated by a specific social cause? By financial independence? By the chance to innovate?
This initial step is critical because your product, team, and market may pivot multiple times. "But who I am," Jorge says, "that most probably won't change very fast." Build from your core, and you'll find the resilience needed to survive the startup gauntlet.
Step 2: Listen for the Complaints (Identify What the World Needs)
Many technical founders fail because they fall in love with their solution before they fully understand the problem. As Jorge observes, engineering-based ventures often struggle because they are technical solutions looking for problems to solve.
The correct order is to look for people complaining. A genuine business opportunity lies where people are currently paying for a product or service, but are unhappy about it. That frustration is your entrance point.
This applies equally to major global challenges and daily, human inconveniences. If your goal is to tackle climate change, don't just research carbon capture; listen to the farmers struggling with unpredictable crop yields or the logistics companies looking for more efficient shipping routes. Find the human frustration, and you will find your opportunity.
Step 3: Creatively Establish the Bridge
This step is where innovation truly happens. You know what you're good at, you know what the world needs, and you know who’s complaining. Now, use your creativity to establish the bridge between those two points.
"You can play with it and be creative," says Jorge. This is the link you iterate on. If your first attempt doesn't work, you change the link, not the problem. You may even adjust the scope of the problem to find a more manageable first step. For a purpose-driven company, this link is also where you integrate your "why" with the good you want to achieve.
The Engineering Pivot
The core challenge for technical founders isn’t a lack of technological capability. The nice thing is, as Jorge puts it, "you know the technology and you know solutions."
The real hurdle is to go out from the workshop, from the lab, and meet people and understand problems. This engineering pivot requires focusing on real-world problems and people, rather than just technical solutions.
The technical skills you have are leverage, but empathy is the rudder. When you combine the two, you’ll be able to build a business that provides genuine value, scales for profitability, and has the power to change the world.
