The Circle of Prosperity: Why Conscious Capitalism is Your Biggest Advantage

LaunchX 2024 Alumni Mariya

In an era defined by technological acceleration and global challenges, young founders have the opportunity to create companies that improve human wellbeing while building profitable and sustainable businesses. Jorge Sanz-Guerrero, a seasoned entrepreneur and LaunchX Entrepreneurship Program mentor, has spent his career proving that building something great does not have to go against creating a positive impact. According to Jorge, doing good and being profitable are not contradictory; they are inseparable when designed correctly.

In today’s market, conscious capitalism isn’t just an ethical choice, but your biggest competitive advantage. Discover how the "Circle of Prosperity" framework can turn your startup's positive impact into its greatest competitive advantage.

Exploring purpose driven business strategies for modern young founders

Disproving the False Choice

Profitability is essential. It is the fuel that allows a business to fulfill its mission. As Jorge points out, "No profit, no scaling up."

However, the pursuit of profit at all costs is a flawed strategy. This old model often views employees as costs to be minimized and communities as resources to be extracted. A model where profitability and well-being are in balance takes creativity to find, but companies that succeed in doing so often find they build more resilient, long-lasting businesses.

The Circle of Prosperity

To achieve this balance, Jorge introduces a framework he calls the Circle of Prosperity. This framework consists of three interconnected pillars that must work in harmony:

  1. The Product: Does it solve a real problem and deliver tangible value?
  2. The People (Collaborators): How are you creating well-being for the people working with you? Straining your employees can be profitable in the short term, but leads to high turnover and poor morale. Getting the best out of your people requires giving them your best in return.
  3. The Community: How does your business interact with the world around it? Giving to the community isn't just about corporate social responsibility (CSR); it’s about creating a positive impact that comes back to the business. People come from the community. Your product is bought in the community." When a community appreciates what you're doing, they will help you succeed.

Authenticity as Your Competitive Edge

This conscious approach is more than just good karma. It’s smart business, especially when considering younger generations. Younger people have been taught about sustainability and social impact from an early age. They are a more conscious consumer base.

A value proposition built on genuine sustainability is a powerful differentiator, when done in an authentic manner. In the age of social media, "greenwashing" - pretending to be sustainable without true commitment - is easily exposed. A single video can create a massive PR problem for an inauthentic company. Authenticity and consistency between what you say and what you do are critical.

Real-World Leaders

Several organizations embody the "Circle of Prosperity."

  • Algramo: This Chilean startup is a perfect example of a company that is profitable by design because it solves a social and environmental problem. Algramo matches production with what people actually need, reducing packaging waste and lowering costs for consumers.
  • Wheel the World: A company that makes travel accessible for people with disabilities. This is a purpose-driven venture that provides immense value (creating experiences for people who might otherwise be unable to travel) while also being a profitable business model.
  • Jaipur Rugs: A company mentioned in the book "Conscious Capitalism" by Raj Sisodia. Jaipur Rugs connects underemployed artisans in rural India directly to global markets, ensuring fair wages and improving the well-being of the creators while producing a high-end product.
  • Patagonia: Patagonia is a titan of this philosophy, recently structuring itself to ensure all profits are dedicated to protecting the planet. Their unwavering environmental stance has resulted in fierce, unmatched customer loyalty, driving higher sustained sales than competitors who simply rely on traditional marketing.

The Path Forward

The future belongs to the conscious entrepreneur that rejects the myth of sacrifice. When you use your creativity to find that middle point, your positive impact will maximize your profit. That’s how you build a business that not only scales, but matters.
