How Judy Ma Mastered the Art of the Pivot and Built Argyros
When you only have two weeks left before Demo Day and your initial tech idea hits a brick wall, freaking out is a pretty normal reaction. But for Judy Ma, a participant in our LaunchX San Diego Flagship Program, letting stress take the wheel definitely wasn't an option.
Her summer with LaunchX was a whirlwind of unforgettable core memories. From the legendary Egg Drop Challenge where "someone from our team cracked it before it was even thrown off the building," to trying out surfing for the first time with her group after growing up surrounded by the freezing lakes of Toronto, every single moment felt like a memory in itself.
The Two-Week Pivot to Argyros
The plot twist dropped right in the middle of the startup phase. After realizing their initial Chrome extension idea would take weeks of manual authorization just to launch, Judy and her team didn't hesitate to pull off a fast pivot.
Fueled by a genuine passion for fashion, styling outfits, and keeping up with industry trends, Judy channelled her creative energy straight into her entrepreneurial ventures. Drawing on her prior experience running Allumage - an independent minimal-luxury accessories business that has already pulled in $1.3K USD in total revenue since launching its website in January, she proposed a streetwear brand called Argyros, meaning silver in Greek.
"Because I already have an accessories business," she explained, "I had experience with the business model, with manufacturers, with shipping costs, with building the website". By focusing tightly on belts, belt chains, and keychains with low sourcing costs from manufacturers in Asia, the team generated $226 USD in revenue during a hyper-compressed timeline while making high-end streetwear aesthetics much more accessible. "Nobody was a slacker, and it was a really good team atmosphere. I trust them," she shared, proving that betting on yourself and executing fast beats waiting around for the perfect idea.
Building Inner Strength From the Ground Up
Judy's work ethic and ability to handle high-stakes pressure are rooted in a deeply personal journey. Navigating a serious health experience through middle school completely shifted her lens on life, teaching her that being alive matters and she wants to make every moment count. Since then, she's gone to Greece for the International Economics Olympiad Final Round at the International Olympic Academy Competing against 149 global finalists with unexpected, off-book calculation questions across microeconomics, macroeconomics, and financial literacy, Judy proudly secured a bronze medal while representing Team Canada.
That approach shows up everywhere in her work today. It is visible as she coordinates directly with overseas manufacturers in China to build out the supply chain for Argyros, or as she balances multiple ventures alongside academic contests. She treats complexity as just another puzzle to solve with total clarity and momentum and as part of living life to the fullest.
Advice for Future Launchies
Looking back at her whirlwind summer, Judy has some real talk for future Launchies stepping into the arena. Time slips through your fingers before you even notice, so staying on top of communication and avoiding procrastination is non-negotiable to avoid a frantic scramble right before Demo Day.
Most importantly, she encourages everyone to stay open-minded and lean into the community. And if you’re an introvert, you will still find your crowd. There will always be people reaching out to you in the community.
After Demo Day, the entire team decided to keep building together. Taking Argyros from a drop-shipping model into an original design brand during her upcoming gap year is just the beginning.
