In summer 2024, Mariya joined the Ann Arbor Entrepreneurship Program at LaunchX with a bold idea: an AI-based platform that generates personalized books inspired by real stories. While she came to explore entrepreneurial skills, she encountered a challenge that would redefine her entire approach to innovation: the need to work across cultures and perspectives.
A Direction Clash That Led To Innovation
Her LaunchX team brought together students from across the globe: Mariya and two teammates from Central Asia, and Kate from the United States. At first, excitement ran high - but differences quickly surfaced. Mariya’s team leaned toward a software-driven solution, while Kate strongly advocated for a hardware-based approach. What began as a spirited discussion soon escalated into real tension. “By the third week, our team was on the verge of giving up,” Mariya recalls. “We weren’t failing because of a bad idea. We were failing because we couldn’t see the value in each other’s perspectives.” It was a moment that could have marked the end of the project. Instead, it became the turning point. Mariya proposed a bold compromise: what if they combined their ideas?
The result was a hybrid solution: an eco-friendly accessory made from recycled materials, embedded with a hardware-triggered emergency alert system. Alongside it, the team built a digital platform where users could design and preview custom accessories virtually. “This solution was transformative. For the first time, we worked as a true team, building on each other’s strengths.”
Their innovation was recognized as the best project in the program, generating real sales and sparking interest beyond LaunchX. After the program, the team continued working together, securing an investor and beginning to scale the venture internationally.
The Startup Was Only the Start
Mariya’s journey at LaunchX didn’t end with the product. The experience redefined her understanding of leadership and collaboration. More than a technical exercise, it became a lesson in how to build bridges - between people, cultures, and ideas. “Being a bridge builder isn’t just about resolving conflict. It’s about listening, understanding, and finding ways to connect seemingly opposing visions.”
Today, Mariya studies Computer Science at NYU Shanghai, with an eye toward building technology that crosses boundaries. Her goal? To foster global collaboration and drive innovation that reflects diverse voices and real-world complexity.
From Prototype to Perspective
Mariya’s story is one of open-mindedness, not only in building a startup but in shaping a mindset that values empathy and adaptability. It’s the kind of transformation LaunchX is designed to ignite - where technical skills meet personal growth, and startups become springboards for bigger missions. “LaunchX challenged me not only to innovate, but to lead across differences - and that’s something I’ll carry with me well beyond any pitch deck or product.”
