I’m a freelancer in the fashion industry, but I want to start a home-based baking business to get some more money coming in. I’m not looking to be a HUGE business, but to be able to bring in around $200 a month would be good. How can I promote my business and gain customers? – H.C.

Free samples are a great way to build word of mouth advertising for your business. Be sure that they are packaged with two of your business cards (one for them to keep and one for them to pass on). Even better would be adding a “first time buyer” discount (5 or 10% or a free extra, depending on your products) that is also on that business card tag with the free sample.

Other methods are to produce brochures and mail or deliver them (along with the aforementioned business cards) to the office managers at the buildings in the geographic area you are interested in serving or that you are in on a regular basis with your freelance work. There are always needs for snacks for meetings and events and the office manager tends to be the one who keeps all the menus.

If you have a gropu of Twitter followers or Facebook friends that are potential customers (or who may know potential customers), you can do a Friends & Family kickoff for your business (same discount or free offer) to them.
