I have my own cleaning business, but I don’t have any luck getting jobs. I have no means of advertising other than word of mouth, because I have no funds to advertise. Any advice would be appreciated. – J.S.

Since you have few funds to advertise, use your service as an advertisement. Make flyers or business cards that offer a “first cleaning free” and hand them out to people who know you so they can refer their friends. Take those same flyers to real estate agents that handle rentals – some may hire you to clean when people move out and others may refer you to their new tenants. The idea is that if you do a great job, and can offer a fair price, then you will get re-hired.

Offer free cleaning services as prizes for local charity auctions or other events. You get the exposure and marketing, the charity gets a prize that lots of people are interested in, and possibly the opportunity to land a new client when you do the free cleaning.

And never forget to talk to everyone you meet, ask them about themselves, and tell them about your business. You never know which one of those people will become a client or a source of referrals. Always have a supply of your business cards handy!
