Use These Principles to be a Successful Entrepreneur

Thinking about starting a business? Not sure you have the tools necessary to succeed? Can't find a good answer to that question no matter how long you surf the internet?

It's not you...the "right" answer just isn't out there. There is no hard and fast list of requirements that will guarantee your success in starting a business. Sure, there are some cheesy quizzes that give you points for being a risk-taker, for having formal education, for having certain kinds of work experience, but they really don't tell the whole story. Rather, entrepreneurship covers a range of behaviors and abilities that culminate in one's ability to make sound, reasoned decisions across a spectrum of business situations. That is -- the more you know about yourself and what you are trying to do, the better off you will be.

Use Planning to Control Risk

If you are serious about starting a business, there are some things you can do to develop the balance of skills you will need to succeed. First, thoroughly planning your business is essential. Not only will you identify the threats and opportunities along the way, but it gives you the chance to really study the various business fundamentals every entrepreneur needs to know. Identifying the obstacles and advantages of your business idea will help you control the actual risk of launching your venture...thus eliminating one of the misunderstood problems of going out on your own. Successful entrepreneurs are not necessarily highly risk tolerant -- instead, they take the attitude that the majority of inherent risk can be mitigated by knowledge and calculated action!

Learn the Basics of Business

Actually planning your business also provides the opportunity to fill in any gaps in your fundamental business knowledge. As you prepare financial projections, take the time to learn the details of the various financial statements, what they mean, and how they can help you down the road. As you develop a marketing plan, dig into the basics of advertising, branding, and competition. The most successful entrepreneurs become experts on every aspect of their business. That doesn't mean you have to head up every department as the company grows, but as the owner, you should have a good idea of what is going on throughout the business.

Balance Optimism and Realism

Aside from fundamental business skills, entrepreneurs tend toward certain attitudes about themselves, their business, and the world. Most tend to be big picture thinkers, also known as dreamers to the less optimistic. But it is better to develop a balance in perspective, where you can see the benefits of understanding yesterday, taking care of today, and keeping an eye on tomorrow. Unfortunately, it can be difficult for one person to cover all those bases all the time, so often the best-run businesses have a team (the owner and key staff, partnership, whatever) in which the top leaders bring each of these views into focus for everyone.

Be Committed to Independence

As mentioned above, taking the attitude of a risk-slayer is another advantage, as is a strong commitment to independence. Risk-slaying is all about the knowledge. The more you know about your product, customers, competition, and business basics, the easier it is to see problems long before they arise and to make decisions to keep them at bay. A commitment to independence allows a successful entrepreneur to push opportunities as far as they can with a never-give-up attitude -- right up until the writing is starting to appear on the wall. Then, savvy entrepreneurs pull back before risking too much, reevaluate, make changes as needed, and push off again. Think of it as like those solo sailors who cruise around the world. They push on, trying to break the previous time record, but they are willing to pull in to port when necessary to ensure their trip is completed.

There is no comprehensive test that will tell you whether you have what it takes to succeed in business for yourself. However, diving in to a thorough business planning effort can be very revealing -- both in terms of your idea's viability and your own commitment and ability to develop the knowledge you need to succeed!
