Need to Write Blogs for Your Startup? How to Find Great Ideas

So you've launched the perfect website for your business and are ready to dive into article and blog marketing. Now what? Many new business owners have so much going on that it is difficult to come up with the perfect topic for articles and blogs. Don't worry about it -- you are the expert in your field and have plenty to say. Here are some techniques to make getting started with topics easier.

Talk

Chat with others about your venture. Friends, family, customers, employees, networking contacts, even the guy in line at the grocery store provide opportunities for you to chat up your business. Talking about what you do can help you identify the key information you need to write about. What do you tell people about your startup? What features make your business stand out from the competition? The more you talk about your startup, the more refined your pitch becomes and the more clearly you can see what really matters to your customers.

Listen

Hear what people say to you about your business. What questions do they ask? What features do they seem most interested in? What confuses them? Ask your friends, family, staff and customers what they would like to know about what you do. Find out if there is anything they don't understand about your work or how to do it. Unless you are building long-range missile technology, there is rarely a good argument for keeping what you do a complete secret. Writing about how you do your job won't be encouraging potential clients to do it themselves rather than hire you. Do it yourselfers weren't going to pay for your services anyway, and potential customers will feel like you can be trusted because you are open and honest.

Read

Keep up on news within your industry, especially that which might affect your customers. Read the publications and websites of your trade association, sign up for relevant newsfeeds and mailing lists, ask for customer feedback and questions. Any information related to what you do can provide article and blog ideas. The more you read about your field, the more topics you will think of.

Pay Attention

As a new business owner, you are likely neck-deep in your venture at every waking moment. Pay attention to what you are doing and keep the search for writing topics in the back of your mind. All the talking, listening and reading will only do you good if you put those situations in the context of looking for article and blog topics.

Write Them Down

As you develop your topic-seeking skills, you will find yourself thinking, "Hey, that would make a good article or blog topic." more and more frequently. Unfortunately, once you sit in front of the blank screen, all those ideas tend to magically vanish. Make a habit of keeping a pen and pad of paper with you to jot down ideas as they come or text yourself the ideas on your phone. Having a list of ten or twenty potential topics makes sitting down to bust out a couple of articles much easier!
