Easy Ways to Get Traffic to Your Business Startup's Website

In the new economy, every business needs a website. But merely uploading a web page into the vast wilderness that is the internet is not enough. Posting a website without marketing it is like dropping a business card at the South Pole -- if no one sees it, it might as well not exist. The effectiveness of any type of business website depends on a number of factors, but there are a few simple tools anyone can use to build traffic.

Get Social

Social networking is quickly becoming a prime source of communication. Get your business signed up with Facebook, Twitter, and any social sites that target your market and industry. Post short content and advertising messages 3 to 4 times per week at a ratio of 4:1. That is, four interesting and relevant facts or information about what you do to every one advertisement or specific marketing piece. Offer special offers to members of your social networks and be sure to include clickable links in your messages that lead directly to your website.

Write a Blog

Keep your customers and potential customers up to date about what's going on with your business and industry. Blog pages are fairly simple to set up and Google indexes blog entries relatively frequently. And, a blog doesn't have to be a term paper -- just 150 to 500 words, two to three times per week to keep your target market informed. If your business is basically just you, feel free to write about what you are up to -- just keep it positive and interesting. Blogs are a great way to get your customers involved in the conversation.

Capture the Traffic

Be sure to incorporate a method for capturing the people who visit your website. While it is not particularly wise to require login to view all website content (that makes people suspicious), you should offer a mailing list signup and a way for potential customers to contact you with questions online. At a minimum, request an email address...you can always follow up for more detailed information later.

Use the Data

Going to the effort to collect contact information is only worthwhile if you use it effectively. Put together a basic newsletter each week, include some informative content and a plug for your product or service. Send out coupons with different coupon codes -- either to print and bring in or to use online -- and track which emails drive the most sales.

Write Articles

Write one or two articles per week about your business and industry and publish them to online article sites like EzineArticles.com. Not only will those articles provide legitimate links back to your website (an essential SEO technique), but by sharing your expertise with your target market you will increase direct traffic and, hopefully, increase sales.

Include Your Website Address

This is an often overlooked but really simple method to get traffic to your website. Include your web address in every printed item, including business cards, letterhead, invoices, and in every advertisement, email, or other contact you have with your target market. Make sure your existing customers know about your site.

Your business website is a crucial weapon in your marketing arsenal, but it is only as good as the effort you put into it. Keep your content fresh and interesting and use the tools outlined here to market your online presence.
